More common than you may think, baby facial eczema, also known as infantile atopic dermatitis typically appears in the first six months of life. This is when the baby’s skin barrier is fragile and stages to retain moisture. Up to 80% of babies will outgrow this infantile or baby eczema but unfortunately there are some babies who do not.
Preventing your baby from itching his or her skin may help prevent infection of the skin. This is especially during the night time when baby is asleep. You can use a number of eczema garments or eczema clothing such as scratch sleeves or eczema suits. These eczema suits are made from breathable fibres such as cotton, silk or bamboo. It is also a good idea to regularly trim your baby’s fingernails to prevent scratching and damaging the skin.
Avoid dressing your baby in artificial fabrics such as nylon or polyester. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals and consider your baby’s environment and sleeping area. Ensure this is free from dust, mould and pet dander which can be triggers for eczema. Your baby should sleep with a comfortable temperature. Avoid heavy blankets that may overheat your baby during sleep. This can further aggravate your baby’s itchy, eczema prone skin.
As always, we recommend Robertson’s Skin Repair Ointment for your baby’s eczema or dermatitis. This is natural and effective for sensitive babies skin. Robertson’s is suitable for all ages from three months onwards.
